Yukiya Amano, Secretary-General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) (72), is considering resignation on the way to term by March of next year. A diplomatic source has come to light. Health anxiety is the reason. The IAEA commented in an interview, “The Executive Secretary discussed the plan with the members of the Board and made a formal statement at an appropriate time.”
If the IAEA leaders are replaced, it may affect the future of the Iranian nuclear agreement, which is in danger of collapse, as the US leaves.
Amano joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1972, became an ambassador to the Japanese government in Vienna, and became an IAEA Secretary-General in 2009. The current term is the third term until November 21st. I was away from temporary work after receiving surgery last year.
