Ten housing units evacuated in Sandviken due to water main breaks

Families in 10 houses have left their homes in Sandviken, Bergen after large volumes of water flow out below E39. There are fears that the E39 could collapse.

Residents of three houses were asked just before midnight by police to leave their houses after they discovered it that large quantities of water were flowing out under a wall under E39 at Åsaneveien in Bergen.

It has now expanded the evacuation area. At one o’clock, families in 10 houses were taken out and lodged in hotels.

Fears that E39 may crash

Bergen police fear that the entire E39 could collapse at the Sandviken toll station after a large water pipe burst. If the E39 crashes, it will cause enormous problems in the traffic flow in Bergen, says interim leader Casper Kaland to NRK.

Kaland says 750,000 liters of water has flowed out, taken with it soils and have hollowed out the ground below E39.

The emergency services were notified. 11.23. Large police, fire and Bergen water crews are on-site, along with health personnel.

The area is being surveyed with drones for an overview, but it is difficult. Bergen Water tries to locate the leak.

Unsafe ground conditions

NRK’s on-site reporter, Christine Kongsvik, says police are knocking on doors, waking people up and asking them to leave their homes. She says that families with children are on their way out of the area.

The evacuation can be further expanded if the emergency services are not able to control the water masses.

The reason why a larger area is now being evacuated is that there are uncertain ground conditions. It is not immediately clear if the houses are based on mountains or masses that can be taken by the water, so people are asked to leave their homes for safety.

Police have blocked off the Åsanevegen where the water main break is. They fear that a wall under E39 and the houses below could be taken off the water.

Police say on Twitter that the leak occurred on the one-way road between Sandviken Hospital and the exit to Bergen city center. This road is now completely closed.

E39 is also closed at Sandviken till station toward Bergen.

The recommended detour is via County Road 587 Hardangervegen, which is via Arna – Nesttun reports the Norwegian Public Roads Administration.
