Apple buys Intel from most of the specialized on smartphone modems division. The roughly one billion dollar deal will involve around 2,200 employees switching to Apple, a large proportion of them in Germany. Intel will continue to can develop mobile modems, for example for PCs, autonomous cars and networked devices in the Internet of Things, as the companies announced on Thursday.
Apple had recently settled a lengthy patent dispute with the chip company Qualcomm. Part of the deal is that Qualcomm should deliver modem chips for upcoming iPhone generations. With the control of the Intel division, Apple could also develop its smartphone modems. Intel introduced the modems of the current iPhone and had announced after the announcement of Apple’s agreement with Qualcomm to get out of this business.
